American Idol Top 6

American Idol Top 6

So…I had more to say about tonight’s American Idol episode than would fit on a tweet, so I decided to hop on over to my blog to write. Funny thing, though…I haven’t even been to the blog since January 19. I was locked out of it, and couldn’t even remember my password!

Maybe this is a good way to break back in…some light-hearted Idol chatter. As a matter of fact, it was Idol that got me started blogging years ago in the first place.

Anyway…hello friends! I’ve missed you.

Here are my favorites from tonight’s Idol, along with some thoughts…

1. Joshua – Crazy Little Thing Called Love – this was one crazygood performance. Everything about it. It’s hard to make a repetitive, up-beat, extremely well-known song sound amazing and completely vocally impressive. But he did it. Just like he did with Runaway Baby a couple of weeks ago. This is his sweet spot. Good grief. Ang and I stood slack-jawed through the whole thing.

2. Joshua – Ready For Love – the run he did on the last “ready-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y-y for love” was the best run I think I’ve ever heard on Idol ever. He gets my #2 spot tonight for that alone. The whole song was well-paced, to me. He showed restraint in the beginning, which I liked.

3. Jessica – Dance With My Father Again – this girl’s voice kills me. Such a big voice. And she has so much maturity in the way she shapes her phrases and in the choices she makes with her pacing. She’s so good. And on top of that, I think she has the most potential for success in today’s pop market. We still go back to the recording of a couple of weeks ago and listen to her sing Stuttering. I thought it was perfect.

4. Elise – I don’t know the name of the song, but they referred to it as the Jimmy Hendrix song – I thought she sounded incredible. The judges disagreed with one another, and I actually agreed with all of them. Like Steven said, I don’t think the song is well-known enough to be memorable to the audience. And like Randy said, she was definitely pretty heavy-handed with it. Lots of big, active singing on a song that seems as if it would be much less like that in its original state. But, like JLo said, she killed it. Her runs were amazing. Her vocal styling was spot on. She attacked it in an energetic, fun and convincing way. She was relaxed and having fun. And I totally bought it.

I thought all 6 contestants were stellar tonight. But these four were my favorites. I still don’t have a feel as to who is going to make the finale. It’s less clear that it’s ever been in years before, in my opinion. If Phillip can survive this off night, I think he might be the closest thing to a shoe-in for the finale. And for what it’s worth, I think he’s really great. His tone in the center of his range is just awesome. It reminds me of Sting’s tone. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I have never listened to Dave Matthews. My only Dave Matthews experience is seeing him in Because of Winn Dixie. Did I just admit that? Seriously? Anyway, since I never listened to Dave, I don’t join the common refrain of folks who say Phillip is too much like him.

I thought Skylar and Hollie had great nights, too. Hollie has been strong two weeks running. And I think Skylar has made the most improvement of any of them throughout the competition. Her first song tonight was my favorite of hers of the season.

I’m gonna guess that Elise and Hollie will be in the bottom two tomorrow night, and Hollie will go home. We’ll see.

Who was your favorite? Who do you think is heading home this week?

I have to agree with you about bottom 2…I think Hollie will go home, even though she nailed The Climb…I think she sang it better than Miley did when she sang it on Idol a couple years ago. I love love love Phillip Phillips…I think he is the most original style and is just plain adorable…and NOT too much like Dave Matthews (who I have heard, and don’t really like, but I get what everyone says)….This is indeed the hardest year on Idol to pick a clear cut winner, because they are all freakishly crazy good….

  2. Renee on April 26, 2012 at 4:45 am

I just hope it is not Phillip. He is truly an artist.

  3. Heather Lusky on April 26, 2012 at 6:00 am

Phillip Phillips will win Idol. I have said this since he auditioned. Enough said!

  4. Carole Chaput on April 26, 2012 at 6:26 am

Thanks for the professional review Travis and welcome back to your blog!

Yep, we think Phillip Phillip’s the next American Idol, a good ‘ole Georgia boy!

Jessica and Elise are amazing too.

Elise reminds us so much of Stevie Nicks and Jessica is simply one of a kind vocal brilliance!

This by far is the best Idol yet…which I say every year, btw. I have always loved Phillip, he is so……himself, and he doesn’t let anyone change who he is ….refreshing! Skylar is great as well…she will be a star on the same scale as a Carrie Underwood…at least in my opinion. Joshua is awesome and I love Elise…such a throw back to the sixties, Janis Joplin, type voice….my fav of hers was the Zepplin song from a few weeks back…….YEA!! Loved little Hollies version of The Climb…her best ever…actually had some emotion. Too little too late, I’m afraid. But who will win…….uh… will be between….uh…..the best of the top three….uh…Phillip, Skylar or Joshua. There, that narrowed it down.

  6. Jennifer Jarrell on April 26, 2012 at 7:11 am

I’m pulling for Skylar! First because she is good but also because she’s a Mississippi girl! Joshua is amazing! My top three would be Skylar, Joshua, Phillip;)

  7. Angela on April 26, 2012 at 7:30 am

I can’t believe you wrote that about Dave Matthews and Winn Dixie! I said the same exact thing last week when someone told me Phillip was just like DM. I’m like “the guy from Winn Dixie?” In what way? Never got on the Dave Matthews Band train. But I love Phillip. A friend wrote a post the other day that said, “Phillip Phillips has got somethin’ somethin’. Yup.

Like many, I think this is an especially good year talent-wise. I appreciate every one of the contestants and their abilities, but I feel like Jessica and Joshua are the biggest talents in general. Jessica is more consistent than anyone, followed by Phillip. Jessica and Joshua have such amazing, impressive, beautiful, big voices and I love them both. These are the 2 I would possibly buy cds of. Do I think either will win this season. Probably not. I would guess that Phillip will likely win because he IS very talented and unique and more main-stream rock…sort of. 🙂

Hollie’s going home. Phillip, Jessica, and Skyler will be the last 3 standing. I hope Jimmy makes his comments tonight because he is always right on!

In my opinion Jessica is the most talented contestant this show has ever had. She is Beyonce, Whitney, and JHud’s love child. For 16 years old, the sky is the limit for that girl.

That being said I think Phillip will be the last one standing. I called that from his audish (sorry the Jack Black in me came out)!

  10. Kellie on April 26, 2012 at 9:28 am

I have been locked out of my blog, too! Unfortunately, I don’t have access to the e-mail that was attached to it either. 🙁 Still working on it!

Anyway, I have missed you on your blog and especially your Idol rundown. So… Obviously all of the contestants are very talented. No doubt. I always get excited for Joshua when he sings. He just makes me happy. Never have liked Jessica or Elise… can’t pin down a reason. I think Elise has sometimes (especially in the beginning) had a bad attitude. Jessica is crazy good, but just not a fave.
Hollie is adorable but I would like her to connect more. Skylar will definitely be a star… Can’t agree that she will be as big as Carrie, though.
Phillip is my family’s stand out favorite. Original, not letting the Idol “powers that be” force him to change. Love him!
Would like to hear your opinion of Colton. Even though he is gone… We loved him, too. Will definitely buy his music! So proud of him for not watering down his love for Jesus!!

I think that Joshua is AMAZING! and I really love Jessica too! But I think that Hollie maybe going home tonight and I think maybe Phillp is in jeporday too! Elise is good too but I really didn’t reconize that Jimmy Henderix song that she sang. But Joshua and Jessica better be safe!

  12. Punky on April 26, 2012 at 6:34 pm

Great review!! Spot on. I agree- Phillip is great…if he makes it thru tonight could go all the way. Great boice and he’s got the “It” gactor. But I think it might be bye-bye Elise. Keep blogging. 🙂

  13. Sandy Hardin on April 26, 2012 at 7:33 pm

I agree with your comments except we were Dave Matthews fans, even going to his concerts(way back in the time!) several times. I think Phillip has some sounds in common with Dave but there’s no comparison between them when it comes to whose real! Phillip drives me crazy with the horrible faces he makes when he sings. I don’t think he will make it to the finals. I do believe that tonight Hollie will be voted off. She just lacks maturity in performance, she has some great vocals otherwise to me. Elise is my favorite.

  14. Curtis Parish on April 27, 2012 at 9:30 pm

Joshua’s run at the end was nothing short of amazing. Skylar is my favorite. Really liked the Lady GaGa song she did a couple weeks ago. I predict it will come down to those too.

  15. Kay on May 2, 2012 at 10:21 am

I have loved Phillip all the way. Love the tone of his voice and will definitely buy his album. Never listened to Dave Matthews either.

  16. Molly on May 10, 2012 at 4:18 pm

Phil is like D matthews, but not completely. I dig him mostly because he is a musician and singer. He gets the whole package of it. The voices are great – but he’s cool and that is just a whole other animal.

But I think its coming down to Jessica and Joshua and Joshua is going to get it. He is unreal.
