On Eagles Wings. I love that song – takes me back to my childhood. πŸ™‚

    • Travis Cottrell traviscottrell on March 15, 2011 at 4:31 pm

      I don’t know that one!

      • Casey on March 15, 2011 at 8:03 pm

It’s typically played in Catholic churches….I keep trying to talk my Baptist Worship leader into putting it into one of our services. I’m with you Alisabeth. Always reminds me of my childhood!

      • Jill Friedersdorf on March 15, 2011 at 10:09 pm

I first heard this in a Catholic children’s Mass, and I believe it may be found now in some Protestant hymnals. It is by Michael Joncas and is very pretty. Yep.

      • Tammy Grant on March 16, 2011 at 10:25 am

I know On Eagles Wings – it is terrific! I’ll leave a copy on your desk

      • Alisabeth Brouwer on April 14, 2011 at 9:55 pm

Okay, seriously – how am I now just seeing that you replied to my comment?? I am your biggest fan and you replied directly to me!! I think I’m gonna faint! πŸ™‚

Seriously though, I was raised catholic (am no longer a practicing catholic) and that is indeed where I heard it. It was always so uplifting and growing up in the home that I did I just loved hearing those words and always needed to hear that God was there even if I didn’t always feel it.

I just thought it would be fantabulous to hear my favorite worship leader put his own spin on one of my favorite worship songs!

Anyway, I’m anxiously awaiting my phone call from you πŸ™‚ so that I can beg you to bring LPL to Peoria, IL! We would pack the house and rock out, I promise!

    • Sandra Jennings on March 15, 2011 at 9:27 pm

Is that the one that says, “And God will raise you up on eagle’s wings” and ends with “Make you to shine like the sun and hold you in the palm of His hand”? I think it’s in my baptist hymnal.

    GLORIOUS DAY

  3. Scott Lowder on March 15, 2011 at 2:30 pm

Come Thou Fount. Probably the first hymn I really connected with. Love the lyric at the end because it so perfectly describes us all ‘Prone to wander, Lord I feel it, prone to leave the God I love…here’s my heart Lord, take and seal it, seal it for Thy courts above’.

    • Karen Reasor on March 17, 2011 at 4:07 pm

That’s my favorite too and I LOVE that very same part! It gets me every time I sing it!

  16. Michele on March 15, 2011 at 2:35 pm

Idk the official name, but the one that starts, “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty. Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee.” πŸ™‚

    • Christine on March 15, 2011 at 4:54 pm

That would be “Holy, Holy, Holy” Michelle! Martin Luther wasn’t very creative with his titles, but he could write a hymn!! πŸ˜‰

      • Christine on March 15, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Actually, not Luther. I confused it with something else. But that is the right title!

    • Sandra Jennings on March 15, 2011 at 9:28 pm

That one is called “Holy, Holy, Holy” in my baptist hymnal.

Is this all you could come up with?? πŸ™‚

      Nice list!

  30. Nikki Murdock on March 15, 2011 at 2:52 pm

That’s a hard one…I grew up singing all of them! Even some of the ones that NOBODY sings! Like, Wonderful, Matchless Grace of Jesus and Just a Little Talk with Jesus. Love the way the parts all move at different times and the Bass and Alto lines rock! Being an Alto, I’m a fan of those types of songs. πŸ™‚ There are others, Be Still My Soul, Heavenly Sunlight, He Leadeth Me, and countless others. I literally could go on and on. I used to have the Hymn numbers memorized…the 1991 Baptist Hymnal anyways. In case you were wondering, Victory in Jesus was 426. πŸ˜‰ But my most favorites are Day by Day and Since Jesus Came Into My Heart. Most people haven’t heard of Day by Day…or the one they think of is from Godspell. lol.

Thanks for making me want to grab my hymnal I “borrowed” from my old church and spend hours playing through it. I love Hymns and sometimes I forget just how much I do…

  31. Kaci on March 15, 2011 at 2:54 pm

When I got married in 2006, I walked down the aisle to “Great is Thy Faithfulness” sung by a man with a beautiful voice and accompanied by the pipe organ. It was the perfect foundation on which to build our marriage.

The bridge “Tho they slay me, tho I fall in darkness You are light, Jesus. I will keep my eyes on you til my faith becomes sight!” Absolutely beautiful!!!

There are so many favorite songs,
    Three of my favs are:

“It is well with my soul”

“Sweet Beulah Land” by Squire Parsons

“Because He Lives, I can face tomorrow”

Everything I hear you sing each Sunday.

I could fill this page of my fav gospel songs.

  108. Joey Williams on March 15, 2011 at 8:00 pm

‘Tis So Sweet to Trust in Jesus”
    “Jesus, Draw Me Ever Nearer”

  109. Leigh on March 15, 2011 at 8:05 pm

Like A River Glorious, especially this phrase from the third verse:
“They who trust Him wholly find Him wholly true!”

Honestly, Travis, you could go through an old Baptist hymnal and I would probably find 90% of the hymns I could call favorite. I am so glad I grew up singing those hymns in church, in youth choir (where I became the alto I am today!)and playing them for piano lessons. My now 32 and 25 year old daughters were rocked to sleep with Victory In Jesus, Love Lifted Me, When We All Get to Heaven, Amazing Grace and Take the Name of Jesus With You. While I like, even love lots of the more contemporary worship music we sing today, I don’t think you can beat the deep Biblical truths expressed in the hymns nor the great harmonies that just beg to be sung.

  110. Shatcher on March 15, 2011 at 8:14 pm

My favorite is “In the Sweet By and By”. Must have sung it 10 million times while rocking my babies to sleep.

Love so many songs that you have arranged like the Casting Crowns songs from “Until the Whole World Hears. My praise choir sung most of those around Christmas last year.

Heaven’s Jubilee, Jesus Saves, Shackles, Yahweh, Alive Forever, Amen, Mighty to Save, Wonderful, Merciful Savior, How Can I Keep From Singing, Hallelujah Anyhow (Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir), I Will RIse, How Great Is Our God and here’s a twist…two songs that I’ve written…”Thank You, God” and “A Sinner’s Praise”.

Just like a few others, I could name so many more songs. Picking just one is too hard to do.

    Hallelujah! What A Savior

Man of Sorrows! what a name
For the Son of God, who came
    Ruined sinners to reclaim.
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!

    Bearing shame and scoffing rude,
    In my place condemned He stood;
Sealed my pardon with His blood.
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!

    Guilty, vile, and helpless we;
    Spotless Lamb of God was He;
    β€œFull atonement!” can it be?
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!

    Lifted up was He to die;
    β€œIt is finished!” was His cry;
    Now in Heav’n exalted high.
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!

When He comes, our glorious King,
All His ransomed home to bring,
Then anew His song we’ll sing:
    Hallelujah! What a Savior!

Praise to the Lord, the Almighty! especially this verse…….

    Praise to the Lord, who doth prosper thy work and defend thee;
Surely His goodness and mercy here daily attend thee.
Ponder anew what the Almighty can do,
If with His love He befriend thee.

And Crown Him with Many Crowns, “Who died eternal life to bring, and lives that death may die.”

  130. Missy S on March 16, 2011 at 8:37 am

Toss up between “Be Thou My Vision,” “It is Well with My Soul,” and “Because He Lives”! Although, I do love “I’ll Fly Away,” too, even though it’s more of a knee-slapper than a hymn – haha! Have made it known to my close family members that they should sing it at my funeral with big smiles on their faces! (After they sing “It is Well” with lots of tears, of course – just kidding!)

P.S. While we’re on the topic of favorite songs – have a random question – any chance y’all can sing “Your Great Name” at LPL Charlotte? Love that song & just had to ask b/c I keep having this vision in my head of all of us singing that. πŸ˜‰

Will be praying for y’all as you work on the CD! I know it’s going to be great!!

  131. Beth on March 16, 2011 at 8:55 am

I mean. Really! Lol. There are so many. I grew up w/ all the hymns. I played the piano @ our little country church. My mom insisted that I play @ least one verse of some of them during my practice time each day. Now I can just about tell you what page each is on. I am still playing them. My husband is a pastor so the piano player comes with the package. πŸ™‚
My list would look like this:

    How Great thou Art
    Because He Lives
    Great is thy Faithfulness
    Without Him

Fun post. Thanks for asking us!

  132. Nancy D on March 16, 2011 at 9:13 am

    It Is Well
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
    My Jesus, I Love Thee
Thou Lovely Source of True Delight (love Jars of Clay’s version)

I have to say one of the most sung hymns in my home growing up was “Count Your Blessings”! My mom would always sing that to me when I would have a bad day (or a big pity party) and we would “count our blessings” to feel better!

  137. Brian Bennett on March 16, 2011 at 12:43 pm

I can’t pick just one! Here’s my current top three with my favorite line from each:

    >And Can It Be — “My chains fell off. My heart was free…”

    >Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing — “O to grace how great a debtor, daily I’m constrained to be…”

    >The Love of God —

“Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade,
To write the love of God above,
    Would drain the ocean dry.
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.”
(Ok…so that’s more than a line, but I love that entire verse!)

I’ve been praying for you and all those involved in your current recording project. I can’t wait to see how God will use it for His glory!

    God bless!

Great Is Thy Faithfulness. God gave me this song, over and over in my head and heart while I was fighting for life from a chemotherapy treatment gone wrong. That was July 2009 and still when I hear this song tears of gratefulness for a faithful, loving God flow. He preserved me during that 12 months of treatment and continues to give me strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow.

I am the founder of a new ministry Fruit of the Spirit Christian Center, INC. We officailly opened March 2, 2011. we are planning a concert for 2012 at Coveleski Stadium in South Bend, IN and I wondered if you would pray about being a part of this awesome chance to glorify God and to help raise funds for the ministry. Fruit of the Spirit is a women’s prison ministry, soup kitchen, clothes closet and food pantry. since mid February we have clothed over 75 families and fed over 35 families by the grace of God. We are currently working out of my home and are in the process of getting business cards, a website and a building as funds come in. I think you have a great sound and I do like the music from the Lord. Go God!!!

Amazing Grace is my absolute favorite – to me it holds out, to everyone, the promise of God’s grace. Love it!

But I remember singing “Abide With Me” at school in Scotland as a little girl, years and years before I ever became a Christian. The words to that hymn stuck with me through a lot of really bad times. “…When other helpers fail and comforts flee; Help of the helpless, O Abide with me.” I was not raised in a church and had no idea what it meant, but the idea that there was a “helper” with me, – I needed to know that.

It is so hard to list just one…..so I’ll list a few that come to mind right off the bat. πŸ™‚
    Great is Thy Faithfulness
It is Well With My Soul
O, For A Thousand Tongues To Sing
    Victory in Jesus
    My Jesus I Love Thee
    How Great Thou Art
    Because He Lives
    Amazing Grace
    Holy, Holy, Holy
    O worship the King

Can’t wait for the new album/cd….standing with you in prayer! Since the enemy is attacking (i.e. your computer), I’d say this is going to be an awesome project ordained by God for ‘such a time as this.’ May God supply your every need TC!

With out a doubt my favorite hymn is “Blessed Assurance”. Jesus is mine!!!

  160. Pat Jones on March 21, 2011 at 1:14 pm

thank you for asking! enjoyed reading all the responses and agree with all of them. One song, however, that I didn’t see mentioned is “LOVE DIVINE, ALL LOVES EXCELLING”….my favorite phrase is “lost in wonder, love and praise”!
It’s encouraging to see that the great songs are not forgotten, it is discouraging to see all the times someone said they don’t do them anymore. It’s true what you say about God not ceasing to create when Fanny Crosby died…however, I think He gave her and the Wesleys, etc. those hymns for a reason and didn’t mean for them to be thrown out either.
Btw, we’re doing “Jesus Saves” in our Easter service!!!

  161. Robin Self on March 21, 2011 at 5:48 pm

I have to be specific and say verse 3 ( I realize most good Baptists don’t know any verse 3’s! lol ) of “It is Well With My Soul”..I get choked up each time I sing those words, “My sin, not in part, but the whole, is nailed to the cross and I bear it no more…Praise the Lord, Oh my soul!” Doesn’t get much better than that! πŸ™‚

    • Robin Self on March 21, 2011 at 5:58 pm

Although my NEW favorite hymn is your version of “In Christ Alone” ….That one deserves page 1 in every hymnal that is published from now on!! Just can’t sing that one without standing with hands raised to the sky! I put that one in our rotation frequently, and always at Easter!

You don’t realize how hard it is to just pick one, however mom reminded me we’d get another turn or two as we are going to keep this up. One of my all time fav’s is Great is Thy Faithfulness and How Great Thou Art (okay two of my fav’s.
