Brace yourself for randomness. And possibly some melodrama. I’ve been pretty introspective today. That always leads to a little melodrama.

1. We had three bags of Golden Flake Sweet Heat potato chips this morning. We have no bags of Golden Flake Sweet Heat potato chips tonight.

2. I’m concerned about the future of Peyton Manning with the Colts. It doesn’t sit well with me that Irsay fired the Polians without telling Peyton. I hate it when a team doesn’t respect what a franchise player brings to a team for so many years. I recognize that they have to look to the future. But for crying out loud, this dude brought them more than a decade of wins. COME ON. It doesn’t look good, and I don’t like it. #Manningfan

3. I’ve never despised my age. I like my age. But today I don’t like my age. You know why? Because I WANT TO BE AT PASSION 2012. That’s why.

Seriously, I’ve been preoccupied all day praying for students I love who are at Passion. And for my wonderful boss Beth, who was bringing the Word today. I’m praying these students come back to Jackson with passion for Jesus that will alter the way we worship, study and respond to God. Honest…I’m expecting them to SHAKE IT UP.

4. I’m sad that my kids start back to school tomorrow. And by ‘sad’ I mean ‘ecstatic.’ Oh, yeah baby. I’m going to be a much better parent with them in school a little while. 🙂

In all seriousness, it’s been a sweet Christmas break with the kiddos. Fun ages to do lots of things together we all enjoy. Still, yea for school.

5. Speaking of kids, random phone pic of the day:

This kid of mine cracks me up. As he sees me pulling my phone out to take a pic, he says, “Hold on. Let me look like I don’t know you’re taking a picture.” Yeah. ‘Cause that’s a normal pose. Funny guy.

6. The oatmeal at Starbucks is muy delicioso. I could eat it every day.

7. My wife made biscuits and chocolate gravy and eggs and sausage for the kids today for breakfast. While I was at work. And did not tell me about it until after it was too late. Should I be angry about this? 😉

8. I can’t believe how much better the NFC is than the AFC this year. The past few years it’s just been the opposite. But this year, I’d say there are 4 or 5 NFC teams better than the best AFC team.

My disdain for the Patriots may or may not have affected that last statement.

That’s all the random for today. I’m sorry you can never get these two minutes of your life back.  See you soon.

Was so blessed to get to watch some of it online. God is blessing this generation with such an outpouring…so thankful!

I feel the same way about my kids and school – love them to pieces, get a huge kick out of them most of the time, enjoyed a wonderful Christmas break with them, but so so glad that someone somewhere invented school and the bus that takes them there.

I also feel the same way about the Patriots. I’m an NFC fan myself – Eagles – not an easy life. And my disdain for the Pats approaches that which I feel for the Giants and Cowgirls.

Blessings to you in 2012 – sounds like we’re both getting a fresh start and refreshed perspective.

Ditto with the kids and school thing! :-). Blessings to you!

  5. Fran on January 4, 2012 at 7:02 am

Jack completely cracks me up. Hilarious kid! And chocolate gravy?? Never had it…kinda scared of it. Afraid I won’t like it. And praise God for kids back in school….they were maybe “around me too much and slightly needing a break from the togetherness”

And…Passion…don’t get me started. How I wish I knew Jesus at that time in my life and could have gone so I think I need a pass and can go NOW!! 😉 The teaching and the worship has been simply amazing.

Have a fabulous day…thankful for all you do! Oh yeah…saved this on twitter from yesterday that Francis Chan shared with group leaders…””One of the biggest problems in our church today is our weirdness… Our inability to just talk to people & hang out.” For some reason I thought of you and your previous blog post.

    Now I’ve rambled. Peace.

You gotta get Angela to make you some chocolate gravy. It’s a game changer.

I loved this, absolutely too funny.

  7. Kim Bounds on January 4, 2012 at 7:35 am

Totally agree with 2,3,4 and 8. Only be mad at your sweet wife if it gets you the food. 😉

  8. Julie Reynolds on January 4, 2012 at 7:47 am

Funny, funny stuff…you made my morning with you’re randomness and I too wish I weren’t too old to be at passion 2012.

  9. Melissa Higgins on January 4, 2012 at 7:58 am

I am the same age as you, Travis, and I want to be at Passion 2012! I volunteered in 2008 and it was one of the best times of my life! Maybe you can go with your kids someday. It is awesome. Have you been watching the live streams? Still amazing. Blessings to you!

  10. Lisa on January 4, 2012 at 8:04 am

    I’m with you on #6.

  11. Tina on January 4, 2012 at 8:12 am

Well…if it were me and I was told about Chocolate Gravy for breakfast after it was too late I would be quite upset….so yes you should be upset unless she knew there was no way you could get home from work to eat it…then no reason to waste the time upset. 🙂 Passion, ughh I wish…As for Kids back in school…mine are home for 3 1/2 weeks. This is what they call Christmas break….this is what I call Christmas torture, j/k. I think at this point, kids are ready to go back because I am annoying them. I find it funny that they are at the age that they don’t want to even be seen in public with me. LOL They are afraid I will embarrass them. Their right, I would…LOL Thanks for sharing the randomness. Its always good to hear someone else having random thoughts too… :O) God Bless!

I’ve been following your blog since I went to Living Proof Live in Lincoln, NE last June and this is my FAVORITE post you’ve ever done! Thanks for deciding to share more of your mind and heart with people.

  14. Val on January 4, 2012 at 9:42 am

    What’s chocolate gravy??? I want some 🙂

    • Travis Cottrell traviscottrell on January 10, 2012 at 10:51 pm

It’s so good. I will have Angela come on here and blog about it soon.

  15. Vicki Wilbanks on January 4, 2012 at 10:33 am

Love random thoughts and you almost have a trail of thoughts like women. The spaghetti side of our brains! I too am a much better wife and mother when little feet are gaining wisdom in some other brick building! ESPECIALLY during cold weather. I mean really how many video games can two kids play?

My boys are wanting desperately to be on Americas Funniest Videos and like your son they stage funny video material. Just doesn’t come off that funny though (please don’t tell them that).

  16. Daniel Semsen on January 4, 2012 at 10:34 am

Um…You’ve been too old for the Passion conference FOR SOME TIME NOW, CHIEF!!!

  17. Linnea Casino on January 4, 2012 at 2:07 pm

    Go Pats!!!!!

  18. Paige on January 5, 2012 at 9:51 am

I “strongly dislike” the classlessness of the Patriots as well – Amen brother!
