Thinking About Home

Thinking About Home

Hello friends. I hope you all are having a good week. All is well here in the Cottrell household. We are working hard to stay cool…in the literal sense of the word. Summer is great…THIS summer is great…although the heat does have a little bit of an angry edge.

My mind is wandering to next week. We have a Living Proof Live event in Charlotte.

I’ll never forget our first Living Proof Live event in Charlotte, NC. It was in June, 2001. We were in the middle of our 4th year serving with Beth Moore and LifeWay with Living Proof Live. We had already seen God do so much in the first 4 years of serving with Beth, we were google-eyed for most of the time.

But I was extra pumped for Charlotte. I’m a NC boy, born, bred and Carolina proud. I love everything about North Carolina…the people, the places, the food…everything. You may know this by now, since I may or may not have blogged or tweeted 50 or so pictures of Cheerwine (a NC soft drink) and Bojangles this year alone.

By the time our Charlotte event rolled around in 2001, Beth and our LifeWay LPL team felt like family. This was our FIRST event in NC. So I was pretty much on stun, and pumped to welcome my ministry family to the Motherland.

To add to the fun-ness of this event, it was also our first time with our sweet Mandisa as part of our team. Another one of our team members, Nirva Ready, had just taken a job singing on the road with TobyMac, and had to pull out of our Charlotte trip (Nirva still sings with Toby, still travels with us, still is one of our favorite people on the earth, and is married to Seth, who sings on our team). I had met Mandisa a few weeks earlier, singing with her at a spring revival at LifeWay. The Lord prompted my heart to call her and ask her to join us in Charlotte. She had 4 days to learn about 40 songs. And she did! I’m so thankful for that prompting from the Lord. Mandisa sang with us for 5 years, and even managed our ministry office for much of that time.

But the most fun thing about that event was the fact that it was the first one my parents were able to attend. My mom’s health was already pretty quickly deteriorating (she eventually passed away in 2004), so it was a little bit of a stretch for them to travel to Charlotte and come to an event in a big arena. But they did. And I’m so glad they did. My dad proudly wheeled her around in a wheel chair. And he felt so special with the parking place we reserved for them.

It was the only LPL my mom was able to attend (my dad has been a few times since). She loved it so much. Of course she was proud of her boy and his beautiful wife. But she also loved Beth and the team. And all the way up to her death, she would ask about them by name.

There’s just something about going home. For some, it’s painful, I know. And for many I realize it’s just geography; just another place on the map. I get that too. But for me, it means a lot. Something about breathing that North Carolina air. Silly, I know. But it’s momentous to me.

I’m happy to be going home for Living Proof Live Charlotte next week. Anybody else going to be there?

If you’d like to go, it’s not too late! Click here for more information. I hope to see you there.

Looking forward to my first LPL event. Beth Moore’s Bible studies have ministered deeply to me over the years and I’m just getting familiar with your music. Looking forward to what the Lord will do in my native Charlotte, NC. May He just stun us purely speechless! And, btw, welcome back to NC ~ I totally get the nostalgia you must be feeling!

    Blessings,

    Travis,

I totally understand the going home thing. I feel that way when I travel to my home state of Washington. I haven’t lived there in 20 years, but something about being there, seeing the mountains and the water and breathing that Pacific Northwest air is just special. I feel it to the core of myself that regardless of geography, it will always be home.

Enjoy your time in Charlotte, may your voice be strong, your words ring with the Truth and God be richly glorified through your ministry there.

This post brought tears to my eyes, Travis. Wish I was going to NC!

    Hey bud.
Just read this and so many great memories came flooding back!
I remember meeting D for the first time on that event and we were bonded for life. She wanted to hotel room temp set at 78 and I wanted it at 68. That’s just a start at how different we found out that we are! But it has made for one of the richest friendships on this earth for me. Thanks for taking a chance on her and on me with the team! WE ARE FAMILY!
I will be praying for ya’ll in Charlotte this weekend. Sing the house down little bro!

I was at that 2001 Charlotte LPL event. It was my introduction to LPL and I loved it. Because of it I ended up going on the Beloved Disciple trip to Greece. The LPL events – your worship team’s music and Beth’s teaching have meant a lot to me in my life. Y’all help keep me on track!

    Blessings for this upcoming event.

What a sweet memory to have of your Mom!
Betcha she’s still singing along with you all… just from a different vantage point! “Unobstructed view” so to speak!

Lead on fellow God-follower! May your voices ring onward and upward to the ears of the Most High and may His presence fill the whole place!

Travis, I’ll be there with BELLS on! I’ve used Beth’s studies for several years now to aid me in teaching my Adult Sunday School class. Her inspirational teachings have played a huge part in transforming my life, bringing me so much closer to Jesus. I have to admit that I’m new to your music, but what I’ve heard is powerful. To say that I’m excited about next weekend would me an understatement!

Another reason I’m so excited is that I am bringing my best friend of over 20 years with me. She is a Christian, but has only heard me speak of you and Beth. Right now, she’s excited to have a girls weekend away from our husbands and children, but she’s in store for SO much more than that! I can hardly wait to watch her life begin to tranform next weekend! Beth’s inspriational and heartfelt teachings combined with your “goosebump” inducing music is the PERFECT combination!

See you next Friday! I’m counting the hours!

    -Andrea

Um…I doubt you will stay hidden for the whole weekend. 🙂

      Woo hoo!

Also: Rats. Still sad we can’t come to the library on Friday. 🙁

I wish I could see YOU too sweet Almond Joy. Sorry – I couldn’t resist. 🙂

      • Joy Allmond on July 13, 2011 at 9:53 am

Tee hee… Thanks Mrs. Jan. I hope you’re having all kinds of garden-related fun this summer. My mom is about ready to set my dad’s garden on fire. She’s shelled about 1 million too many butter beans. Ha!

“You know you’re from (southeastern) NC when…”

We have a group of ladies coming that simply can’t wait! It’s such a double blessing for us! We can’t wait to hear what God has to teach us through Beth, and we can’t wait to be lid in worship with you, Travis! You will be singing us all the way there from Roanoke, VA on our ipod or CD player….which ever we can get to work on little church bus! We are so excited to worship with the whole team next weekend!

I’ll be there along w/ my mom & mother-in-law! Can’t wait!! Looking forward to singing some of those new songs of yours (hopefully!). In fact, I have played and replayed the Deeper Still recap video just so I could listen to”The Word of God has Spoken.” Eagerly anticipating the CD release!

Thanks! Excited to lead that one next week.

  19. GA Jan on July 12, 2011 at 12:40 pm

Travis – You are something else young man. I love the way you write and so wish I could be at LPL with you and Bethie in NC but I’m attending a family reunion with my husband – all his mother’s people – the Moody’s – relatives of Evanglist D.L. Moody. There will be more preachers there than you can stir with a stick! It is an absolute BLAST!

You’ve touched this mom’s heart with your love for your Mom – she raised a good boy. She would be so proud of you and she will be there with you because you are part of her!

    Blessings to you Travis,
    GA Jan

P.S. I had my first taste of your wonderful softdrink Cheerwine just last week! It is oh so good.

  20. Lindsey on July 12, 2011 at 1:51 pm

I’ll be there with a group of ladies from our church in Apex, NC!! We are counting down the days, we are so pumped!! Can’t wait to worship with you and your team and hear something powerful (I’m sure!) from Beth!!

  21. Melissa Price on July 12, 2011 at 5:06 pm

Travis, I went to my first Beth Moore Conference four years ago with my best friend, Martha Floyd. I was pregnant with my 7th child, having lost five in a row. One hour into the conference, I had serious complications with the pregnancy and Jeff had to drive to the conference and get me. We prayed all weekend for God to save our child. And now four years later, we have our little man Preston!! My best friend Martha and I are once again hitting the road for Charlotte next week! Although I am still having minor setbacks from my recent “horseriding” accident, I cannot WAIT to praise my God from my wheelchair!!! So glad that God continues to bless me, and so excited to worship Him in your home state as well!

    • Travis Cottrell traviscottrell on July 12, 2011 at 11:05 pm

So thankful you are going to be able to come. And I will be so proud to have “new home family” with my “old home family!” 🙂

  22. Joy Seastrunk on July 13, 2011 at 12:08 am

Looking forward to being at my 2nd conference, this one I get to share with my daughter.

  23. Kristy on July 13, 2011 at 8:05 am

I cannot wait!!! My best friend since high school and I are making the trip from Princeton, NC (east of Raleigh). We love you and Beth so much! Y’all are like part of my family! In fact I ran to Victory in Jesus this morning…granted the NC humidity and heat will kill you right now so I had to pray hard to make it 😉 but it is still God’s country! And we can’t wait to welcome you back to it!

  24. Kristi Simmons on July 13, 2011 at 8:50 am

I absolutely can not wait. Going to these conferences has been the highlight for the past 5 years. Thanks for all you and your team put into it. I am also so blessed while I am there. Can’t wait to see what God has in store for this one.

  25. Kelly S on July 13, 2011 at 11:35 am

What a special story, thanks for sharing it 🙂

I am coming and bringing my oldest daughter. It will be her first LPL! Im so excited for her. My mom is also coming, and all I can think about is Beth’s generational message at DS. Praise the LORD!

  26. Martha Floyd on July 13, 2011 at 4:53 pm

I am excited about going to Charlotte too. Although I live in Jackson TN, Charlotte is just 60 miles north of home. Even better, I get to see my little sister. Best of all, I get to here a fresh word from the Lord through Beth Moore.

  27. Kristi Brewer on July 14, 2011 at 12:26 am

Can’t wait! This Raleigh girl is Charlotte bound!

    Hi Travis,
I hope you all have a wonderful time in Charlotte! I had originally planned to be there, but my Student Pastor roped me into chaperoning our youth trip to Camp Caswell jk 🙂 ….. actually I am looking forward to going….just wish I was able to go to LPL also!! I love Beth and love you and your worship team! Jesus Saves Live is my most favorite…my girls and I listen to it ALL the time especially when something is going on that we need to stay focused on the One who can help.
We live in Clayton, NC…I am not originally from NC but have lived here for 20 years and love it.
Your hometown is one of my favorites…love Boone, Blowing Rock, and Banner Elk. God’s country for sure!
Be blessed in Charlotte, I will be thinking of you all!!
Love you and thanks for being obedient to our King!

Yes, plan on being there in Charlotte! A trio at our church this morning did the Revelation song and it made me think of LPL. You and your praise music team are such a wonderful part of the weekend worship experience.

  35. Senta Morris on July 25, 2011 at 10:08 am

North Carolina, What can I say, It’s great here. I was born and raised here and will probably die here. But, I was one of the 9400 that attended the Living Proof Conference in Charlotte. I was absolutely blown away by Beth and especially by the music. See, music is important in my family. My 15 year old son is in a praise band that travels from church to churc playing. Their ages range from 12-17. I( I guess am a little partial) think they are wonderful. They play, sing, and share their faith: and for teenagers, Oh, my gosh! that’s incredable. I wouldn’t go back to being a teenager in this society right now for nothing.

I saw your video for “Got skills”, and I was thinking that you should appeal more to your teens for help in the music. Their is some really great talent out there, and attracting them into church can only be a blessing! Most Kids are just looking for an invitation to share their “stuff”. Maybe even some music camps.

I’m sorry, you already have a wife to tell you what to do, so please excuse me. But, I just felt led to tell you these things. Anyway , have a blessed day and If you have any words of wisdom for my son and his music, please let us know. Maybe he would listen to you, because right now his parents are the stupidist people on earth!! I just know that his music is his life and he really doesn’t know where to go from here!

Please come back to NC soon!!

    Blessings,
    Senta Morris

  36. Frances Thomas on July 25, 2011 at 9:56 pm

Charlotte LP conference was totally awesome!!! I’ve been to a couple of Beth Moore Bible studies, but this was my 1st conference. About a 3 1/2 hr. drive one way & well worth it. Thanks for an awesome experience … unforgettable!!!

  37. Chris on August 9, 2011 at 5:46 am

Wow–I had no idea you’re from the Old North State! Yes, Metrolina is home for me also, and I enjoy being there when possible. Next time in Charlotte try Pinky’s Westside Grill: Cheerwine, Sundrop, fried pickles, great burgers, and possibly the best banana pudding. and yes, it’s a shame Bojangles has such a small geographical footprint.
